Jim ThorpeWorlds Greatest Athlete 

   Jim was born near
Prague, Oklahoma in 1887. Jim died at home in his trailer in
California on March 28^th 1953, after having a heart attack. He was only 64 years old.   Jim was famous for many things in his life. He was one of the world’s greatest athletes. He was a pro football player and a major league baseball player. He competed in the Olympics, and was also in the Merchant Marines.   Jim was a descendent of the Sauk and Fox tribe. The Sauk and Fox tribe was located in North and
South Dakota.Jim competed in the Pentathlon and won the long jump by jumping 23 feet. Jim also competed in the Decathlon, where he won the shot put, the high jump, and many other events he was in. Jim was awarded a gold medal for winning. Later, the Olympic committee took it all away. They said that Jim was not an amateur because of his baseball career. So they removed his name from all the record books. In 1982 the committee gave back his amateur status and put Jim’s name back in the 1912 records. Jim received many honors after he died. He was awarded the Greatest American Football Player in History, and he was put in the Professional Hall of Fame. Also has a highway in
Oklahoma named after him?   I chose Jim Thorpe because he was a great guy and he was able to accomplish lots of different things in his life. I liked that he was so good in every single sport he did, because I really like sports too. Bill Pickett

 Cowboys intended to train their sons to be profession, but Bill Pickett seems to have picked up cowboy ways in partnership with his brothers. He was born in Travis County, TX, about 30miles northwest of
Austin on December 5, 1870 and was second oldest in his family of 13 children. His father, Thomas Jefferson Pickett, was a former slave, and his mother Mary Pickett was part Cherokee Indian .His family moved to
Austin when he was a baby where he attended school until fifth grade. School was poor for blacks back then. As a young man he always found work doing odd jobs such as breaking horses, driving cattle to the market, branding stock, and patrolling the huge ranches in Texas and Oklahoma.By the time he was 18 his family moved to
Taylor, TX there he was able to become a ranch hand and help support his siblings. 

     In the 1880s five of the Pickett brothers joined and opened their own stock business in Taylor TX. Their job was to break wild horses. One day Bill woke up and found he was blind and it might have been from bronco busting or from an infection he caught. By that time he was married and was responsible for several children. The ailment persisted for a year and then one day it disappeared.          

        Bill was famous for his rodeo abilities. His first manager was a man by the name of Lee Moore.Moore was the first to take Bills demo out of
Texas into states such as Kansas, and Oklahoma. In 1903 he signed on with Doug McClure, he gave Bill the nickname the Dusky Demon.

     1n 1905 Will Rogers introduced Bill to Zack Miller an owner of 101 ranches in Bliss,Oklahoma. Miller was looking for talent to fill his roster of the Wild West show.Miller persuaded Bill to come to the ranch and perform in the show; he was promised a full time job off season. This began the longest most fruitful partnership in history of Wild West shows.

     Bill Pickett died on April 2, 1932, after being kicked in the head by a half wild horse. He was buried outside the boundaries of the 101 ranch in a cemetery.

     Bill did not come from a tribe because he was a Blackman. If he had been a white man he would have been inducted into the National Cowboy Hall of Fame. He was finally named in the hall of fame as of 1971, 40 years after his death.

Alice Mary RobertsonBy: Tiffany Hixson 

Alice Mary Robertson is very important to
Oklahoma.  She was a member of congress, a welfare worker and she started a Tulsa university.When her term in congress expired in 1923 she entered the veterans’ hospital at Muskogee and for two years served as a welfare worker.  Later she went to Washington as a correspondent for the Muskogee News. For the next seven years she lived at her country place near Muskogee and operated it as “Sawokla Dairy farm” She is from the Cherokee tribe. It is in the East West region in the
U.S. She attended school at Elmira College in New York. She started in 1871 and continued until 1873.Compelled to leave before graduating in order to provide the education of her sister; she received from the college the honorary degree of A.M. in 1886. She did a lot of stuff in her time; most of it was for soldiers and men in the war. Her work attracted so many people that Alice was elected to Congestion the republican ticket from the second Oklahoma district. She was also taught at schools but I wanted to know why she is famous.Chose Alice Robertson is because I attend Alice Robertson School and wanted to know more about she and what happened in her life. Cherokee Tribe 

          My book report is on the Cherokee Indians. Their territory was in the
Appalachian Mountains. The Indians lived in log houses while others built their houses out of wild grass, mud or river cane. Each house, wild grass, mud, or river cane had a fireplace for warmth during the winter. They hunted fish, deer and most likely bison. All of the Cherokee Indians shared the town work. Even though women usually cooked outdoors they could cook indoors also. Will
Rogers was a famous humorist who wrote about life and politics in
America. One day Sequoyah saw an old English spelling book. He saw it only had twenty-six characters. He made a Cherokee alphabet with at least seventy or eighty characters. My favorite part about this Cherokee report is I can find out a lot more about my might-be tribe. I think I remember my dad saying I might be part Cherokee Indian’s researched the Cherokee Indians because I might be Cherokee Indian. I only used one book called “Cherokee: A New True Book”.            

                                           Troy Aikman

My report is on a famous football player named Troy Aikman. He is one of the best football players. He is still living. He is famous for football and he is great. Troy Aikman is not from a tribe. Troy Aikman has played for OU .he loves sports especially football. He is a great football player. He had played baseball. Troy Aikman threw for a rookie record 379 yards against Phoenix, Arizona. He wanted to play for two collages OU and OULC Bruins. He grew up in Cerritos, California. He went to Henrietta high School. He is a sports Caster on fox net work. He has three awards they are the 1988 Dave O’Brian award, 1992 Super Bowl MVP, and 1997 Walter Payton award. He has the Dallas ring of honor. Troy Aikman played for Dallas Cowboys from 1989-2000. I chose this person because he is a great football player. He played for Dallas. He was the only interesting person to chose. I also like football too. I used the book Troy Aikman Things Change.             

Creek History

Oklahoma is where most Creek Native American’s live today it is much different from their homes but the sunsets are just beautiful. Some Creek still hunt with a bow and arrows as their ancestors did. The creek women show their grandkids how to weave a basket. The creek play a game called stickball, stickball demands courage, speed and skill. Cool fact (Creek Indians are also known as the Muskogee United Tribes).The Creek split up in two divisions by the 1700s.The Creek was infiltrated by white frontiersman .In 1832 Creek leaders made a trey with the United States and creed with other lands. In 1884 the Seminole war began. In all native tribes women do all the work. Most Creek use maps to get around. The Creek Indians consented more than one tribe of Indians. They all banded together and withdrew from all other tribes during the 1500s.  I got my recourses off of google and creek Indians.

Land Run The land run happened in Oklahoma along time ago.
Oklahoma is located in the south central area of the United States. It happened on April, 22, 1889. The government bought the landRun buy themself. The government created the territory for the land run. The government bought the land run for the white people for the land. In April of 1889, people gathered at the borders of what was called the unassigned lands. At noon of April 22, cannons were to be fired. Then people could race as fast as they wanted in to the unassigned land. To claim 160 acres, a person just had to put down the stake.Soldiers were stationed to keep people from entering the area before noon. But some sneaked in before the signal was given. These people were called sooner, because they arrived too soon. Many of the sooner were caught and wound up with no land at all. The government bought the land for the white people and he bought it himself the land and people were proud of him buying land for there country. They wanted the land very bad and it would like it for there world and the government bought themselves.  I choose the land run  because it sounded cool fun and interesting and I thought Mrs. Ray would love my report. I think  this is a very good report for the whole class to hear. I bet everybody will like my report in my class and others too. Mrs. Ray is really proud of me and all of the others. And Mrs. Baker will like my report.The government bought the land to give to the people. There’s a lot you can learn from researching the land run. My research came from the Oklahoma Book.

Reba McEntireBy Tiffany Lasater           Reba is a famous Country singer and actress who was born in
Oklahoma on March 28, 1954. She is now 53 years old. Reba was named Academy of
Country Music’s top female vocalist in 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1991. In 1984 she won a Grammy Award for her song Whoever’s in New England and a Grammy Award for best female video artist in 1987.

          Reba McEntire has her own sitcom called Reba.          Reba was the daughter of a cattle rancher and rodeo steer-roper. She was a good rodeo barrel-racer herself; but she chose other interests instead. Her mother gave her voice lessons hoping that one day Reba would become famous. Reba went to school at Southeastern
Oklahoma
State
